Hiking to Carbeirinho – One of São Nicolau’s Hidden Gems

Bild
Hiking to Carbeirinho – One of São Nicolau’s Hidden Gems Carbeirinho is one of the most unique coastal landscapes on the island of São Nicolau. Shaped by volcanic rock and centuries of wind and waves, the cliffs and rock formations create a dramatic and almost surreal scenery. For hikers, the journey itself is part of the adventure. Getting There There are several ways to reach the starting point for the walk to Carbeirinho. One option is to take an aluguer from Tarrafal in the direction of Praia Branca . Ask the driver to drop you near the Carbeirinho turnoff. From there, it’s about a one-hour walk through a quiet, scenic landscape until you reach the coast. If you prefer a more comfortable option, you can also take a taxi or arrange a private driver who can bring you closer to the trail and pick you up again later. Another beautiful option is to start your hike directly in Praia Branca . Walking along the coastline offers impressive views of the Atlantic and the rugged nort...

Hiking Monte Gordo – The Green Heart of São Nicolau If you think Cabo Verde is only dry hills and volcanic rock, Monte Gordo is here to gently prove you wrong. At 1,312 meters, Monte Gordo is the highest mountain on São Nicolau and the lush, green surprise of the island. The most popular starting point is Cachaço , a small mountain village that you can easily reach by car or by aluguer from Tarrafal or Ribeira Brava . No heroic logistics required. Just show up with decent shoes and some water. From Cachaço to the Summit The classic hike goes from Cachaço up to the summit and back. The path is well-known and steadily climbs through changing landscapes. The higher you go, the greener it gets. Yes, greener. On São Nicolau. Try to stay calm. You’ll walk through: Tall eucalyptus forests filling the air with that sharp, fresh scent Wild cacti standing like stubborn desert sculptures Impressive dragon trees that look like they belong in a fantasy novel Coffee plants growing ...

Boca Ribeira – Where Time Slows Down Just about 4 kilometers from Praia Branca lies one of São Nicolau’s hidden gems: Boca Ribeira . It’s the kind of place that makes you forget the rush of the world. Here, the Atlantic stretches endlessly before you, its deep blue surface broken only by the rhythm of the waves crashing against dramatic rock formations. Boca Ribeira is a paradise for anyone who loves the sea. Locals alike come here to fish—the waters are rich, and the calm surroundings make every cast of the line feel meditative. Even if you’re not fishing, it’s easy to lose track of time simply watching the waves break and reform, a quiet performance that never repeats itself quite the same way. The rocky shore reveals fascinating shapes carved by wind and water, and if you wander a bit, you’ll find small treasures hidden between the stones—colorful shells polished by the tide. Whether you come for meditation, fishing, or simply to breathe in the ocean air, Boca Ribeira is a place wh...
